FEBRUARY 2, 1866
The first
daylight robbery in the United States history during peacetime took place in
Liberty , Missouri on October 6th, 1866 when the Reno Brother's boarded a
eastbound train in Indiana wearing masks and toting guns. After emptying one
safe and tossing the other out the window, the robber's jumped off the train
and made a easy getaway. This is considered to be the first robbery
committed by Jesse James and his gang, although James' role is disputed.
The Civil Rights Act of 1866 was passed by Congress on April 8th, 1866
over the veto of President Andrew Johnson. The act was declared that
all persons born in the United States were now citizens, without regard to
race, color, or previous condition. As citizens they could make and enforce
contracts, sue and be sued, give evidence in a Court of Law, and
inherit, purchase, lease, sell, hold and convey real and personal property.
Persons who denied these rights to former slaves were guilty of a
misdemeanor and upon conviction faced a fine not exceeding $1000.00 dollars,
or imprisonment for 1 year or both. The activities of the KuKluxKlan
undermined the workings of this act and it failed to guarantee the civil
rights of African Americans.
Alexander II of Russia narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in the
city of Kiev.
The United States Congress eliminated the half dime coin and replaced it
with the five cent piece, or nickel.
Charles Elmer Hires invented root beer.
The Canadian Parliament met for the first time in Ottawa.
The Austro-Prussian War started June 14th. The Austro-Prussian War was
decided at the Battle of Konniggratz, resulting in Prussia taking over as
the prominent German nation from Austria.
The National Labor Union was created to pressure Congress to make labor
law reforms.
Tennessee became the first U.S.State to be readmitted to the Union
following the American Civil War.
